SALISBURY, Md. - The Gallaudet University men's track and field program made its 2019 outdoor debut here Saturday at the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet hosted by Salisbury University. No team scores were kept for this five-team meet.
Senior Toraneau Varice (Pompano Beach, Fla.) won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.37 seconds. Sophomore Louie Akuffo (Bowie, Md.) was fifth (12.24) followed by freshman Austin Bates (Lacey, Wash.) in seventh (12.62).
Varice followed that with a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.33) followed by fellow senior Michael Haynes (Edwardsville, Ill.) in fourth place (24.11).
Senior Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas) finished second in the 400-meter dash (54.99).
Haynes won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.43 seconds. Senior Gunner Hahn (Delavan, Wis.) was third with a time of 16.09.
GU's 4x100 meter relay team was second with a time of 47.22.
Junior Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) won the discus throw (36.82 meters) and was second in the shot put (11.85 meters). Junior JaQuan Thomas (Savannah, Ga.) was fourth in the shot put (10.43 meters) and fourth in the discus (32.53 meters).
Sophomore Juan Cornejo (Hamburg, N.J.) was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 28.27 meters.
Freshman Nicholas Smith (Hamburg, Pa.) was second in the javelin with a toss of 42.76 meters.
- D'Mitri Lofton (Gaithehrsburg, Md.) was fourth in the long jump (5.35 meters)
- Liam Painter (Edgewood, N.M.) was fifth in the 800-meter run (2:29.26)
- Akuffo was sixth in the 200-meter dash (25.19)
Gallaudet will next compete at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) next weekend (March 8-9) in Wilmington, N.C.
