Senior class completes four-year run with final home game against rival

Gallaudet offensive lineman Cameron Ethington goes up against a SUNY Maritime defensive lineman in a day game at Hotchkiss Field.

WASHINGTON – The 2018 season for Gallaudet University's football team ended here on a chilly autumnal Saturday afternoon in a 34-7 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) loss to SUNY Maritime College before 475 at a blustery Hotchkiss Field.

Maritime (7-3, 5-1 ECFC) finishes the season in second place in the ECFC while Gallaudet (3-5, 3-3 ECFC) ends up in fourth in the final conference standings.

Freshman slot Cassmeir Hutchinson (Chesapeake, Va.) ran for a game-high 126 yards on 13 carries. The Bison finished the game with 230 rushing yards and 300 yards of offense.

Privateer quarterback Thomas Wright completed 27 of 46 passes for 363 yards and four touchdowns. Maritime receivers Brandonn Drumgole (five receptions, 107 yards) and Curtis Smith (five receptions, 76 yards) caught two touchdown passes each in the first half. Christian Castle led all receivers with 12 catches and 124 yards. Maritime running back Kahlil Lewin led the team with 11 carries and 55 yards and one touchdown.

Maritime scored four touchdowns on its first six possessions and built a 27-0 halftime lead.

Gallaudet kicker Jacob Guertler (Staunton, Va.) had the chance to get the Bison on the scoreboard first but missed a 36-yard field goal, wide right, as it had the distance on a windy day in the first quarter.

The Bison got down to the Privateer 3-yard line early in the second quarter but freshman quarterback Logan Taylor (South Prince George, Va.) went to rush but fumbled the ball into the end zone where Maritime recovered and got a touchback. A Bison touchdown there would have cut the Privateer 14-0 lead in half.

Wright threw two more touchdown passes to his favorite targets and took a 27-point lead into halftime.

In the second half, Gallaudet scored on its first possession as it covered 75 yards on five plays. Junior Damonte Bray (Clinton, Md.) had a 45-yard run and Hutchinson added runs of 10 and 16 yards before sophomore RJ Randle (McCalla, Ala.) scored from seven yards out at the 12:17 mark as GU trailed 27-7.

Maritime tacked on one final score in the fourth quarter on Lewin's 1-yard touchdown run at the 6:10 mark.

Gallaudet cornerback Laron Thomas (Orlando, Fla.) led the team with 12 tackles (nine solo) while linebacker Mauricio Orozco (Largo, Md.) added 10 tackles (eight solo).

Privateer safety Justin Snuffer and linebacker Liam Bailey had 12 tackles each while the Maritime defense sacked Gallaudet's quarterbacks four times, forced a fumble, recovered two fumbles and broke up three passes.
