Bison sacked by Husson on the road in lopsided loss

Gallaudet's quarterback gets sacked by the defense.

BANGOR, Maine - The Gallaudet University football team lost 63-2 to Husson University here Saturday afternoon at Winkin Complex in an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) game.

Husson (7-2, 6-0 ECFC) celebrated its third straight ECFC championship in its final season as a member of the conference. The Eagles will receive the ECFC's automatic bid into the 2018 NCAA tournament, that begins in two weeks. 

Gallaudet (3-4, 3-2 ECFC) was outmatched on both sides of the ball as it allowed the Eagles to set or tie several high marks by Bison opponents in the modern era (2007-present) since GU returned to Division III those marks include; points (63), margin of loss (61), all-purpose yards (783), total yards of offense (684), a 400-yard passer, touchdowns (nine) including five touchdown passes.

The Eagles scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, six minutes into the first quarter, and GU was down 14-0. 

GU's highlight of the game came in the second quarter when junior punter Jacob Guertler (Staunton, Va.) booted a 47-yard punt down to the Husson 1-yard line. On the next play, Husson running back Miece Loureiro was tackled by senior free safety Louie Akuffo (Bowie, Md.) in the end zone for a safety as the Bison trailed by 19 points, 21-2, with 11:02 left before halftime.

Husson took a 34-2 lead into halftime and outscored the Bison 28-0 in the second half.

Eagle quarterback Cory Brandon completed 15 of 21 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns as GU gave up 400+ passing yards for the first time since last year's Shenandoah University game (437). Brandon threw touchdown passes of 21, 47, 57, 61 and 82 yards. Husson wide receiver Kyle Gaudet hauled in four of those five touchdown passes as he caught seven passes for 249 yards. Loureiro ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns as 90 of his yards came on the game's second touchdown run. Solomon Hassen scored the game's final score early in the fourth quarter on a 71-yard run.

Gallaudet finished with 43 yards of total offense which included 39 rushing yards and four passing yards. In the game, the Bison gained 110 yards on the ground but lost 71 yards, 33 coming on six sacks by the Husson defense.

  • Freshman slot Cassmeir Hutchinson (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Bison with 46 rushing yards

  • Guertler finished with 12 punts that spanned 418 yards (34.8 average) and five inside the 20-yard line
  • GU is 5-6 all-time against Husson since 2008
