Bison run wild on McDaniel

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University and McDaniel College ran their way into the NCAA record book on a cold and blustery Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field. The two teams combined to swipe a combined 23 stolen bases, the most by two NCAA Division III programs this season and second-most all-time.

McDaniel (1-4) picked up its first win of the 2019 season as the Green Terror scored seven times after it trailed Gallaudet (2-6) by two runs, 5-3, heading into the sixth inning.

The game was called due to darkness as it went into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The NCAA Division III record for stolen bases, combined, by two teams is 24 set by Hendrix and Rust on March 24, 2001.

The Bison swiped 14 bases on their own as sophomore Darren Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) stole four bags. Senior Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) and freshman speedster Billy Sowers (Woodland Hills, Calif.) stole three and two bases, respectively. GU had eight different baserunners swipe at least one base. McDaniel College catcher Tom Daly was unable to catch any of Gallaudet's runners on the base paths.

McDaniel stole nine times led by a trio of players who had two stolen bases each. The Green Terror had six different runners swipe at least one base. Gallaudet catcher Matt Scuderi (Jensen Beach, Fla.) threw out two would-be basestealers.

Gallaudet scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first on an Upton RBI single. GU added three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

McDaniel got two runs back in the top of the fourth inning before the Bison tacked on a fifth run in the bottom half.

The score remained in favor of the Bison until the sixth inning when the visitors tied the game at 5-5.

That ended the day for GU starting pitcher Robersy Delgado (Tampa, Fla.) as he threw 5.2 strong innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two. Freshman Josh Dugan (San Antonio, Texas) came on and ptiched the remainder of the game.

McDaniel relief pitcher Brad Thaxton (1-1) picked up the win as he threw three scoreless innings in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for the Green Terror and struck out four batters along the way.
